FUTSAL (edited)
Please note, I’ve talked to Dan at the Stadium and the rules below are very strict, meaning they can’t move on any of them as they’re directives just like we have at school e.g. they can’t have the side doors open for you to watch your child play. We’re lucky this sport is still going ahead as many others have been cancelled so while it may not be ideal for our younger players to go in without, it’s just the way it is and there will be a super friendly manager and other kids from school waiting in there for them.

Draw and teams can be found on facebook.

Miniball Update

Wed Sep 08 11:25am

Miniball Update
The committee met last night via zoom to discuss miniball and it was decided that they will delay the start of miniball until the beginning of Term 4.
They believe with the amount of teams they need to push through and the fact that the little ones need parent support, to operate under 50 will be very tough.
So they will run a 6-7 week competition in Term 4. (Start date: Monday 18th October 2021).

Today’s Assembly link 11am. If you can’t get in the first time because it’s full, have another go on the same link at about 11.20am 🙂

?Senior Production – Cinderella Rockerfella (Sept 22nd and 23rd) ??

Wed Sep 01 12:59pm

I’d like to let you know that I have postponed the production and it will now be in week 3 of term 4 (show dates: Wednesday and Thursday 3rd and 4th of November). The reason I have done this is because I don’t want to put our fantastic actresses and actors (or our staff) under any unnecessary stress to try and get it up and running by week 9 (we’re already in week 6 😬).
As you know, our shows are always well polished and I’m determined that this show will be no different – dirty old Delta will not beat me on this one!
Cast: Please keep rehearsing your lines as when we get back it would be great to just get straight into running the show as quickly as possible. If your child has a part in the show, they have also been sent a link to this weeks table read – 10am on Friday before Assembly.

Reminder: Mrs Hansen has started off a very cool google slide that we will share on Father’s Day.

Level 3 – please take the time to read.

Mon Aug 30 11:50am

There is a clear message from the Prime Minister that at Alert Level 3 schools will effectively continue to be closed for face-to-face learning, other than for the children of parents who were essential workers under level 4 and have no alternative child care options available.Teachers are not considered essential workers so many of our staff will be at home with their own family. We have to operate under very strict guidelines which will be shared with you if your child(ren) is attending. The message remains the same, if you can work or learn from home please do. If this description applies to you then please email me, Annie, at annie.nelson@stmarys.school.nz by midday tomorrow. Thank you for working with us during this time 😃🙏

Welcome to Week 2 of offsite – online learning.

Mon Aug 30 09:06am

Welcome to Week 2 of offsite – online learning.

The Zooms this week will remain the same days and times. A link has already been shared with the Seniors (last week), and one will come for the Juniors. There will also be an assembly on Friday for everyone. There is a 100 person limit so if you can’t get in the first time hang around for an 11.20 repeat.

This week’s online learning is going to look much the same as last week with a new Google Slide for Juniors  that you can access in your class gmail account and the Choice board for the Seniors.

Parents, look out for a message from Annie regarding the strict guidelines around essential workers in Level 3  which will be out later today.

Zoom Timetable for Online Learning

Sun Aug 22 04:51pm

Afternoon Team,
The attached screenshots will give you an idea of what to expect as far as online learning goes this time around. We have taken on your feedback from last time and made changes accordingly.
You will see we have shared a weekly timetable for zoom meetings, fingers crossed we won’t need it but we would rather be well prepared and not bombarding you at last minute.
As Annie pointed out in this weeks newsletter, the secret to our school and community success is that we have a shared understanding that you, as parents are doing your best, as you know we, as staff at school, are also doing out best.
So, do what you can do, when you can do it and how you can do it. We know there’s lots of learning to be had away from a device and we look forward to hearing what you’ve been up to in your bubbles!
If you have any questions, feel free to email your classroom teacher (their emails are in the screenshots below) or anyone else on the team.
Take care and God bless,
From all the St Mary’s Staff 🙂

Children who have a unique and fun talent, involvement in the community, skill or hobby that they would like to share. (This could be anything from cooking to a sport or farming skills. As long as it is something that can be brought to our live location and demonstrated)
A unique form of transport for our presenter to leave on for the closing of the show

Maths Week Whole School Competition – How many balloons can you fit in Miss S’s Nissan Micra?

Tue Aug 10 11:12am

Last year we jammed 373 balloons in Mrs Nelson’s Toyota Ractis, this year it’s Miss Sutherland’s turn.

On Friday we will be jamming as many balloons as we can into her little Nissan Micra! You can win a prize just by guessing how many balloons will fit inside it (wee hint, I think Miss S’s car is smaller than Mrs Nelson’s). We’ll be testing it out this Friday in the quad @ 11.30am.

Interesting Information

The length of a Nissan Micra – 3.99m

A standard balloon has a circumference of 35cm (350mm)

Circumference = distance around the outside of the widest part of the balloon.

Good morning amazing whānau and friends of St Mary’s (you’ll see why I’m sucking up at the bottom of this post),

Tue Aug 03 11:12am

Next term on Tuesday 9th of November we are running our second ‘Kids Summit’. Last year our Kids Summit was so cool it made it into the Ed Gazette Magazine (the Vogue of NZ education). Our Kids Summit this year will be shared with the year 4 – 6 students of St Theresa’s School, Invercargill – how cool is that?
What is our Kids Summit?
Our Kids Summit is a day dedicated to the digital technologies curriculum and the concept of tuakana – teina (sharing of knowledge between students both as teachers and learners). St Theresa’s will join us for the morning session where their students and our year 5 and 6 students will choose two workshops to attend. The workshops will also be run by some students from both schools as well as our professional partners Using Technology Better. The workshops include the following exciting themes: video, coding, animations, robotics and music. We will finish our time with St Theresa’s by having a shared sausage sizzle lunch (the whole school will be invited to join us).
In the afternoon, students from years 3 and 4 will have the opportunity to try out some STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) challenges with our year 5 and 6 students. At this stage we are unable to accommodate our wee fellas down in the junior syndicate but it will be an ongoing event so they will all eventually get to experience it … plus it will get better and better each year so really they’re winning!
The Kids Summit is run like a conference so that it’s an unforgettable experience for the 220 kids attending. They will have lanyards for the day, receive a goodie bag and have the chance to win prizes at the end. That’s where you guys come in …
We are keen to take anything off your hands that you think might work well for the goodie bags or as prizes. Some ideas we’ve been given are … bags with advertising on them, pens, pads of paper, little packets of lollies, drink bottles, wristbands – literally anything would be greatly appreciated.
If you think you can help us out feel free to drop in and see me, email me: mallory.hood@stmarys.school.nz or send your kind donation down to Room Moa. This is not meant to cost people/businesses the earth so please don’t feel as though you have to donate enough for 220 kids or anything for that matter – this is a no pressure plea.
Cheers,
Mallory Hood
Deputy Principal

Mufti Days. We are not involved in Red, Black and White Day tomorrow. Please read to find out more …

Thu Jul 29 03:47pm

He ra pai – what a nice day!

We’ve had a few questions regarding Red Black and White Day for the Southland Charity Hospital tomorrow – we are not joining in on it this year. Unfortunately, we can’t support every charity every year (trust me, if we could, we would and your kids wouldn’t need a school uniform they’d be in mufti constantly).

Last term you supported Gumboot Friday (for mental health), Pink Shirt Day (stand up to bullying) and Caritas (Kristus Raja School) all of whom were very grateful for your generosity.

There are more and more charities popping up each year and our plan is to share our aroha (love) around so this term we are going to support the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day in September.

Thank you for your ongoing support and generosity,

Mallory Hood

Deputy Principal
